Terms of Service

Important: LegisPlain decodes legislation using AI. Decodes are summaries for general civic understanding — they are not legal advice. Do not rely on them for legal decisions. Consult a licensed attorney.

1. Who we are and what LegisPlain does

LegisPlain is operated by getmAIde LLC, a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) incorporated in Virginia. LegisPlain provides AI-generated plain-language summaries (“decodes”) of legislative bills and related documents from the United States and select international jurisdictions.

By accessing or using LegisPlain, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

2. Not legal advice

Decodes generated by LegisPlain are produced by artificial intelligence and are provided for general informational and civic education purposes only. They are not legal advice, legal analysis, or legal opinions. They may be incomplete, inaccurate, or out of date. LegisPlain does not practice law and is not a law firm. Nothing on this site creates an attorney-client relationship. For legal advice, consult a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction.

3. Service tiers

Free tier — Registered and anonymous users receive 3 decodes per calendar month at no charge. Limits reset on the first day of each month (UTC).

Researcher tier — $5/month — Unlimited decodes for the duration of your active subscription. Subscriptions are billed monthly through Stripe. You may cancel at any time; access continues until the end of your current billing period.

Sponsor decode packs — Organizations may purchase decode packs that are distributed to LegisPlain users on a first-come, first-served basis. Sponsor attribution is displayed on decodes that consume a sponsored pack. See the Sponsor page for details.

4. Payments and refunds

All payments are processed by Stripe. By making a payment, you agree to Stripe's Terms of Service.

Subscription fees are non-refundable except where required by applicable law. If you believe a charge was made in error, contact support@getmaide.com within 14 days.

In plain wordsStripe handles the money. We don't refund subscription fees unless the law says we have to — but if we charged you by mistake, email us within 14 days and we'll sort it out.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

Scrape, crawl, or programmatically extract decodes in bulk without written permission from getmAIde LLC
Resell, relicense, or redistribute decodes for commercial purposes without written permission
Use LegisPlain to generate political advertising, misleading campaign materials, or targeted propaganda
Circumvent rate limits or authentication controls, including sharing paid account credentials
Submit bill identifiers or queries designed to probe, exploit, or degrade the service
Represent AI-generated decodes as official government documents or as legal advice

Research, journalism, academic use, civic advocacy, and personal use are encouraged. LegisPlain is nonpartisan — it decodes legislation for everyone, regardless of political affiliation.

6. Accuracy and availability

LegisPlain decodes are generated by AI and may contain errors, omissions, or outdated information. We make no warranty — express or implied — regarding the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, or fitness for a particular purpose of any decode. The service is provided “as is.” We do not guarantee uninterrupted availability. Scheduled maintenance, infrastructure outages, or third-party API limits may temporarily reduce access.

7. Intellectual property

LegisPlain's software, design, and original content are owned by getmAIde LLC. Legislative source text is public domain government content. AI-generated decodes are owned by getmAIde LLC.

You may share a decode publicly for non-commercial civic, educational, or journalistic purposes, provided you include attribution to LegisPlain (e.g., “Decoded by LegisPlain — legisplain.org”) and a link to the original decode URL.

In plain wordsWe own the site and the decodes. The bills themselves are public. You can share a decode anywhere for non-commercial use — just credit LegisPlain and link back. Want to sell it or build a product on it? Ask us first.

8. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, getmAIde LLC, its officers, employees, and agents shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of your use of or inability to use LegisPlain, including but not limited to reliance on any decode for a legal, financial, or civic decision. Our total liability to you for any claim arising from your use of the service shall not exceed the amount you paid to us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or $10 USD, whichever is greater.

In plain wordsIf a decode is wrong and you lose money or make a bad call relying on it, we're not on the hook for it. The most we'd ever owe you is what you paid us in the last year — or $10, whichever is more.

9. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless getmAIde LLC and its officers, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, or costs (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from your use of LegisPlain, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any third-party right.

In plain wordsIf you misuse LegisPlain and that gets us sued, you cover the costs — not us.

10. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising under these Terms shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Virginia. You consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts. If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full force.

In plain wordsIf we ever end up in a legal fight, it happens under Virginia law, in a Virginia court. If one part of these terms doesn't hold up, the rest still stands.

11. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms as the service evolves. Material changes will be noted by updating the “Last updated” date above. Your continued use of LegisPlain after a change is published constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
